Percussive Finger-style Singer Songwriter

Origin Story

Born in Bhopal to a middle-class household, Samar broke his family’s institutional pattern early and had his heart set on music quite stubbornly. Eventually, he found his way to the guitar, and that brought forth a new purpose to his songwriting. Born in Bhopal to a middle-class household, Samar broke his family’s institutional pattern early and had his heart set on music quite stubbornly. Eventually, he found his way to the guitar, and that brought forth a new purpose to his songwriting. Samar quickly emerged as one of the best guitarists from his region, as emphasized by his 440Hz solo stunt that got him through to top 10 of the competition that had over a hundred entries from all over the country. Samar needed a completely exhaustive and original way of writing and presenting music – what he felt was most relevant to the way he had always conceived music and perceived life – but even more than that, he needed to not depend on anyone else for his music anymore to get out of his rut. A few coincidences and accidents like practicing left-hand legato while unintentionally tapping on the computer table near him led him to the world of percussive fingerstyle. What captured his attention about percussive fingerstyle was not the flashy skillshow, but an opportunity to write and perform multi-layered songs organically despite being a solo act. The motivation to train and become worthy of the idea of reinterpretations was the strongest drive he had ever felt. Add to that, the most valuable angle of being able to wrap his overall philosophy about life in his music – Samar had found meaning in reinterpretations, or he calls it, in the “possibilities in impossibilities”.

Ambitions

My dream is to have my music listened to around the world, beyond language barriers, and to tour all kinds of performance spaces across the world and perform my music to huge crowds.

Challenges

Independent music scene brings about the obvious financial challenges, and the DIY space, while having some incredible positive aspects, has that kind of lack of 'big' backing that can be the difference between being able to execute some of the more elaborate plans and being restricted to either looking for alternatives or waiting much, much longer to get there.

I find inspiration in songs than songwriters. By that I mean, instead of digging into discographies, my influences have come from exploration across genres. It's a very dynamic range, and as much as the student of life in me loves to learn from everything that I listen to, I thoroughly enjoy listening to a lot of varied music styles for the love of it. My influences range from ghazals to heavy metal, from folk music to electronic music - you get the picture.

The style of music I usually write in and perform is called 'percussive fingerstyle', and I like to call my variant 'Indian percussive fingerstyle' because while emulating the sounds of multiple instruments on the acoustic guitar, my lyrics and vocals carry a lot of folk influence as well as traditional Urdu. So, 'Indian percussive fingerstyle' best describes what I do on the guitar.

I absolutely live and breathe to perform in front of an audience! Back when I was a kid, my grandma used to say that I have a magician's soul, and she might be right because while making music, I always look for opportunities to create a moment or a part that would make an audience do a gasp in awe. Some of what I write comes from the idea of having the audience participate in the song itself! So the atmosphere of my shows is usually very interactive.

Achievements

For me, the only sort of achievement that interests me is when more people discover my work and give it a chance. And when they come to my shows and sing along, or sing my songs back at me haha! Best. Feeling. Ever.
